Roy Merriam

Suncoast Hospice volunteer Roy Merriam has received the Bay News 9 2014 Volunteer Hero of the Year Award. Roy serves at our care centers strumming his peaceful guitar music for patients and families. He and six other award winners were honored for their community work at Bay News 9’s Salute to Everyday Heroes  Luncheon on March 25. (Read more here about the awards.)

Roy started his musical life as a kid playing a toy ukulele. He says he feels  fulfilled blending his passion for music with serving others.

“I’m just doing what I love and helping people at the same time. It doesn’t get any better than that. It really is a great honor for me to be a part of what Suncoast Hospice does for people. I wouldn’t have gotten this (award) if it weren’t for the encouragement and support I’ve gotten,” Roy said.

The luncheon was an emotional and inspirational experience for Roy, who was accompanied by his wife, Roseann.

“It was really wonderful to see 51 Everyday Heroes from last year and their families and friends at the luncheon. There’s so much good being done. It’s encouraging to know the many people out there helping make a difference. When Roseann and I left there I felt like I wasn’t touching the ground.”
