Clearwater – Suncoast Hospice physician Kirksak “Jay” Poonkasem, MD has received the certification for integrative medicine through the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM), an American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) member board.
This certification indicates mastery of this specialty and professional commitment to adhere to the AMPS board Medical Code of Ethics. Integrative medicine is defined by the ABOIM as the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.
The ABOIM and other ABPS member boards have the following requirements to meet their certifications:
- Graduation from a duly accredited medical school and active and unencumbered licenses in good standing
- Approved accredited medical residency training program
- Recertification every eight years with a written exam
- Verification of credentials

Dr. Jay is also board certified in hospice and palliative care and family medicine and directs the work of the Suncoast Hospice Integrative Medicine Clinic. He is a firm believer in the benefits of blending conventional medicine with integrative medicine. He is trained in medical acupuncture and a licensed massage therapist, as well as a certified instructor in Qigong. He has been with Suncoast Hospice for five years.
