It may happen where we live, or where we work, while running errands or in a social setting. But, when we inevitably encounter that person in our lives who just “rubs us the wrong way,” we have been given a great gift. When we are thrust into situations in which we must interact with people we find difficult to be around, it is a wonderful opportunity. How are our souls stretched if we are always surrounded by like-minded people with whom we get along? What challenge to our character is presented by spending time with people we like and enjoy?

But, if we can be caring and open-minded and truly welcoming with people we struggle with, that tells us something. Author, Joseph Grenny says it like this:

“I believe that the measure of my soul is my capacity to love imperfect people.”

The truth is, we are surrounded by imperfect people. The truth is we are imperfect people. Let’s make a point of it this week to stretch our souls a little bit. Let’s refuse to succumb to the temptation to avoid or exclude or to make the snide remark; and choose instead to extend our extravagant, unconditional welcome.

Have a great week, everyone!
