Chief Medical Officer

Lawrence Kay, MD, FAAFP is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Empath Health. As a key member of the executive team, Dr. Kay oversees all medical programs throughout the organization, providing clinical strategic direction and managing all physicians throughout Empath Health’s integrated network of care. He is a board-certified family physician with extensive patient care and health care management experience. Most recently, Dr. Kay was senior medical director for Clinical Services at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he managed Medical Policy and Quality. Prior to that, he served as CMO for Physicians Plus Insurance Corporation, a largely commercial managed care plan owned by an integrated delivery system in Madison, Wisc. Dr. Kay earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Georgetown University and his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He then completed the UPMC St. Margaret Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania and later on the National Institute for Program Director Development fellowship program.
